The Mother City
Buckle up, adventure seekers! The Platteklip Gorge hike up Table Mountain is a wild ride filled with laughs, sweat, and possibly a few "are we there yet?" moments.
Now, before you start envisioning a leisurely stroll through the park, let me paint you a picture. Platteklip Gorge isn't your average Sunday afternoon jaunt. This hike is like the rollercoaster of Table Mountain trails, complete with steep inclines, rocky terrain, and a serious amount of switchbacks (with a view) at different points.
But fear not! The reward at the top is worth every drop of sweat and awkward stumble over a loose rock. Picture-perfect views of Cape Town spread out below you like a picnic blanket, with the sparkling ocean beckoning you to come closer.
Now, let's talk logistics. The Platteklip Gorge hike is around 2.5 kilometers long, but don't let that fool you. This isn't a race; it's a marathon. Depending on your fitness level and how many snack breaks you take (no judgment here), it can take anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours to reach the summit.
So, grab your hiking boots, pack some snacks (because let's be real, everything tastes better on a mountain), and get ready for an adventure that'll have you laughing, sweating, and feeling like the king or queen of Table Mountain.
Distance: Approximately 2.5 km / 1.5mi (one way)
Duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
Kid Friendly? Yes (we brought ours from young ages)
Get ready for an adventure fit for kings and queens with the Lion's Head hike in Cape Town! This iconic trail has stunning views around every turn and a bit of adrenaline (near the top).
Everyone starts from the base of Lion's Head near Signal Hill. The trail winds its way up the mountain, offering panoramic vistas of the Mother City, the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, and Table Mountain. It's like climbing a stairway to heaven, except the stairs are made of rocks and your legs might feel more like jelly than royalty by the time you reach the top!
The reward for your efforts is well worth it. At the summit, you'll be treated to sweeping views that will make you feel on top of the world...or at least on top of Cape Town. To get there, you will need to hang on to some chains/ropes as you traverse smaller and steeper pathways to the top!
Pro-tip: Start early to catch the sunrise or head up in the evening for a sunset that'll leave you speechless. And don't forget your camera or phone to capture those Insta-worthy moments!
So, lace up your hiking boots, pack your sense of adventure, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure on the Lion's Head hike.
Distance: Approximately 5.5 km / 3.4 mi. (round trip)
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Kid Friendly? Yes & No... the final bit to the summit requires holding ropes. We turned around with our kiddos at that point when they were young, but went to the top as they grew older:)
